The Eurasia Regional Forum for Media Development

takes place in Paris 17-19 April...

Internews Europe is organising the Eurasia Regional Forum for Media Development (ERFMD). This is a three-day event in Paris on 17-19 April 2008 which will improve the quality and impact of media development in the Eurasian area. The aim is to facilitate increased and more targeted support for achieving the common goal of increased freedom in Eurasian societies through greater professionalism and independence of the media. In bringing together a wide range of non-profits engaged in media training and media development in Eurasia to reinforce and strengthen cooperation, it will address priorities for media development, assess what kind of activities are currently missing from the agenda, find better ways of monitoring and evaluating projects and measuring the impact of media development work, and raise other key issues needing to be addressed by leading national experts in the field.

Manana Aslamazyan, Executive Director of Internews Europe and the Chair of the ERFMD Steering Committee, said: ‘This is the first such initiative to bring together non-profits working in the field of media development to talk about our work, the challenges we face and how to address them. We want to foster greater cooperation and we feel that our concerns are more likely to be heard by donors and policy makers if we speak with one voice.’

The Eurasia RFMD is an outreach activity to create regionally specific solutions to media development problems, inspired by the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) – a practitioner-led process designed to be long-term and open to the community involved in media development around the world. Following the first Global Forum in Amman in 2005, the interim steering committee has been working to set up regional forums to improve media development work by fostering better cooperation between media development NGOs at the regional level.

The Eurasia RFMD shares similar aims to the GFMD – fostering cooperation, reaching agreements on evaluation and impact measurement techniques, working together to influence improved development priorities – but is focused on regional needs and specifics.

Two networks of organisations have been involved in organising the regional forum for Eurasia – the South East European Network for Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM, representing 15 non-profit media centres in 11 South East European and neighbouring countries) and Internews (representing 15 Internews organisations and partners in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Ukraine and Tajikistan).

Around 150 representatives of local and international media development NGOs, donors participate at the event hold at the Maison de l’Europe in Paris from 17-19 April 2008.
