The Other Algeria - “Echo des Stades”

During undeclared civil war between Muslim fundamentalists and the military regime in Algeria young people came by the thousands to fill the stadiums that became a public place to talk about political anguish and social problems in the country.

As an undeclared civil war between Muslim fundamentalists and the military regime racked Algeria in the 1990s, international and local media became a major battleground in the conflict. "L’Autre Algérie" (’The Other Algeria’), a television series, explores the complexities of everyday life beyond the narrow viewpoint presented by local media images. The project was initiated as a means of exposing the profound problems that hinder Algerian social progress. Internews Europe has participant in this project in four others of similar nature by providing production grants as well as technical and editorial support.

Every week in Algiers during this period, young people came by the thousands to fill the stadiums of the capital. Despite the violence and the strife, the stadium remained one of the rare public places that the crowds did not desert. Fans gathered often at the Club for USMA to back their favorite team. For troubled citizens, the stadium provided respite from the tumult of everyday life.

“Echo des Stades” features various young people distressed by the current situation in Algeria. El Hadi, a jeweler, Karim, a security officer, Mohamed, an office worker, and students Mehdi and Redha discuss high unemployment, the lodging shortage, the high cost of living, difficulty paying taxes, and the increase in emigration.

Television networks in nine European countries plus Algeria aired the film in the summer of 1998. The film earned critical acclaim in many renowned film festivals, including the Medfilm Festival in Rome, Vues sur les Docs in Marseille, and Vues d’Afrique in Montreal. Algerians viewed the series on Algerian TV and via satellite from Europe.

Nine European television channels funded "The Other Algeria" project together with the European Commission.
