In Georgia The Internews Europe Consortium and its partners produce and disseminate a range of media vehicles designed to complement national assistance programmes, address challenges with a regional dimension and promote cooperation among partners on issues of mutual interest.

TV BROADCASTS

In the frame of the programme Intewnews Georgia and television company Rustavi 2 will produce ten 20-minute documentaries. The documentaries in Georgian will be aired by Rustavi 2 and will be also translated into Armenian and Azeri for broadcasts by local TV stations in the regions where the largest minority groups reside. Rustavi 2 is one of Georgia’s most popular broadcasters and its programmes are consistently top rating throughout the country. Rustavi 2 currently reaches more than 3.5 million people, or 85% of Georgia’s population nationwide. Its broadcasts can also be received by satellite in Europe, in the European part of Russia and in the Middle East.

Some 100 thousand people will be able to watch the broadcasts of ATV-1’ and Parvana television stations in the region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. 90 percent of the population speaks Armenian population. Some 140 thousand people will be able to watch the broadcasts of Marneuli TV and Channel 12 in the region of Kvemo-Kartli. The Azeri population in the area reaches 50 percent of the total.

Issues covered by the documentary films include conflict resolution, energy and environmental issue, increasing partnership efforts in the area of foreign affairs, economic partnership, assistance in border management as part of international security, legal reform, poverty reduction, development of democratic institutions and education. The production and broadcast of documentaries is carried out in two cycles. The first cycle started with the production of 5 documentaries in February 2009-September 2009.

Broadcasting will be first aired by the four partner regional stations in Armenian and Azeri languages in October-November 2009 and in November-December 2009 in Georgian.

The second cycle will start with the production of 5 more documentaries during the period October 2009/February 2010. The films will be aired by partner stations in March-April 2010 and by Rustavi 2 in May-June 2010.

The films will be broadcast weekly, on Tuesdays at 7 pm by all partner stations Broadcasting of all 10 films by Rustavi 2 will also be carried out weekly in prime time (Tuesdays 7 pm-7:30 pm).

RADIO BROADCASTS

In March 2009 independent radio broadcaster Radio Green Wave started producing and broadcasting 64 weekly radio programmes (talk shows) in Georgian. Each ’Euro View’ programme lasts 45 minutes and targets listeners between 25 and 64 years. The broadcasts, aired during a 17 months period, include six components (live sections and thematic sections) tailored to raise awareness and understanding on the main aims and benefits of European Neighborhood Policy in Georgia. Radio Green Wave broadcasts to Tbilisi, as well as to 9 regions of Georgia. The coverage area includes some 3 million people. ’Euro View’ is on the air each Thursday, at 14:30. After being broadcast, the recordings are divided in 6 parts, that are then aired 6 times a day.

Broadcasts cover a wide variety of topics, from EU role in Georgia’s security policy and conflict resolution process, to EU environmental and waste assistance, to national minorities, gender issues, education, development of self-governance with the support of the European Commission, reform in the health care system and other.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

The daily newspaper ’24 Hours’ published in April 2009 the first of 16 monthly 4-page monthly supplements ’Partner.east’. The monthly colour 4-page supplements are part of the last Monday edition. They are published in tabloid format and cover issues identified as priorities in the relationships between Georgia and the EU, as well as ENP programmes and projects implemented in Georgia a. nd in the region.
